Istituto Luce Cinecitt\u00e0<\/strong> dedicates CIS 2017<\/strong> to Michelangelo Antonioni<\/strong>, commemorating the 10th anniversary<\/strong> of his passing, by presenting the US premiere of the digital restoration of BLOW UP<\/strong> and RED DESERT<\/strong> at AFI FEST 2017 presented by Audi<\/strong>.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Michelangelo Antonioni<\/strong> was born on 29 September 1912 in Ferrara<\/strong>, an old city\u00a0in the Po Valley, North of Italy. In 1935, he graduated from the\u00a0University of Bologna with a degree in Economics, and in the early 1940\u2019s moved\u00a0to Rome to attend the prestigious film school \u201cCentro Sperimentale di Cinematografia<\/strong>\u201d, which he had to abandon after only six months, to serve under the army for WWII.<\/p>\n

He starts writing film reviews for the local paper, II Corriere Padano, which he quit for political issues with Mussolini\u2019s nephew, who had a leading role in it, <\/em>and later, when he was in Rome, for the important magazine Cinema. <\/em>He collaborated on the\u00a0script of Roberto Rossellini<\/strong>\u2019s Un pilota ritorna <\/em><\/strong>(A Pilot Returns). In 1942, the\u00a0production company Scalera hired him as scriptwriter and assistant director for\u00a0Enrico Fulchignoni<\/strong>\u2019s I due Foscari<\/strong> <\/em>(The Two Foscaris), then sent him to\u00a0France as co director of the Italo-French coproduction of Marcel Carne\u2019s film Les\u00a0Visiteurs du soir <\/em><\/strong>(1942). Carn\u00e9 was\u00a0not happy with the decision as it was the time of the German\/Italian occupation in France, the relationship between the two never grew up and Antonioni came back before completing the film.<\/p>\n

Returning to Italy to serve the army again, Antonioni shot his first documentary People of the Po Valley<\/strong>, completed only in 1947, after the war. After directing several other documentaries, in<\/em> 1950 it was finally the time for his first feature film, Story of a Love Affair<\/strong> presenting<\/em> topics that\u00a0will be a constant presence in his works the \u201ccrisis of emotions and of\u00a0moral values\u201d within the Italian bourgeois society. With L\u2019avventura<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(1960)\u2013and the next two films: La notte <\/em><\/strong>(196I) and\u00a0The Eclipse <\/em><\/strong>(1962), Antonioni established himself as one of the most talented and innovative Italian filmmakers.
\nHe experimented the use of colour as a key element in the portraying of characters and\u00a0landscapes in Red Desert <\/em><\/strong>(1964). From the mid-1960s on, he explored different cultures and societies. After the\u00a0London success of Blow-Up <\/em><\/strong>(1966), he obtained an MGM contract for shooting\u00a0Zabriskie Point <\/em><\/strong>(1970), then in 1972 he completed Chung Kuo:\u00a0China<\/strong>, <\/em>a documentary on Chinese society and in 1974 he shot The Passenger<\/strong>; <\/em>an international coproduction starring Jack Nicholson and Maria Schneider.<\/p>\n

Antonioni\u2019s interest in technical innovations brought him to The Mystery of Oberwald, <\/em><\/strong>(1980), a film based on a play by\u00a0Jean Cocteau whilst with Identification of a Woman <\/em><\/strong>(1982), he returned to his homeland. In 1995, after years of silence due to illness, he\u00a0co directed with Wim Wenders his \u201ccomeback\u201d film, Al<\/em> di l\u00e0 delle nuvole <\/em><\/strong>(Beyond\u00a0the Clouds). In the same year, he was awarded an honorary Oscar for his\u00a0lifetime commitment to the cinema.\u00a0Antonioni\u2019s final film, made when he was in his 90s, was a segment of the\u00a0anthology film\u00a0Eros<\/em>\u00a0(2004), entitled \u201cIl filo pericoloso delle cose<\/strong>\u201d (\u201cThe Dangerous Thread of Things\u201d).<\/p>\n

Antonioni died aged 94 on July 30, 2007 in Rome.\u00a0He was buried in his home town of Ferrara on August 2, 2007.<\/p>\n<\/div>
